A Trip to Elvis-ville
Friday, October 4, 2002
Well, this weekend we're going to Memphis. It should be cool and all. We'll meet more of Carly's friends and hopefully see her play some volleyball (provided her elbow is healed). Not too much else going on. The drama troupe is having some very good rehearsals. We did blocking for the first time last night. I think it's going to be a great show ... as long as I don't hit anyone in the audience with a flag during the "Phantom Dance". (We're doing a dance to the techno version of Phantom of the Opera.)
I'm hoping this weekend I can de-stress a bit. Goodness knows I need some down time, although I'll probably do some reading and such to keep caught up. Alright, laterz peoples.

I've been feeling a little moodier this past week. Had to go for a run Friday evening, burn off some stress. I have to periodically get by myself and waste some energy just to keep myself sane. Hey, at least it keeps me exercising. I also cleaned my room this weekend (mostly). Now all I have to do is finish my school projects for Monday and I'll be all set.
Mother, you can jealous of me now. We have your favorite Halloween candy propped directly on top of our refrigerator. Amanda got a big bag of candy corn for us to nibble out of, mwuhahahaa! It's important that I get sugar-shock right now, as I'll be missing Halloween again this year. The NCHC (National Collegiate Honors Conference) is being held in Salt Lake City this year. We'll be leaving the day before Halloween. Instead of spending October 31st with my school buds, I'll be with the Mormons. Yeah, the mormons. What an odd people. Apparently they have post-humously baptized Buddha into their church. So, Buddha is a Mormon now. I wonder if the Buddhists might have anything to say about that. Oh well. In any case, no costumes or trick or treating for me.
In other news, my 21st birthday is coming up. Go me! Ah, to be an adult. On October 7th, angels will descend from "on high" and bestow upon me the blessings of adulthood and maturity. (*Scoffs* - Yeah, adulthood, riiiight.) So, I have a week left of irresponsibility. Hmmmmmmm, how should I use this time? Any suggestions? ;-)
Another musical recommendation: Lisa Loeb - How. This song is probably old, but I only recently heard it for the first time. It's so mellow, sad and sweet, I love it. Great for moodier moments.
Well, I must be off now, as I am in desperate need of a Walmart run. Laterz.
TTU is Retarded
Wednesday, September 25, 2002
Why is it that a friggin school for engineers they can't hire engineering minds to organize the campus well in ANY way? The library sux, and the "organization" is ridiculous. Whatever happened to the good ole' Dewey Decimal System, huh? With this stupid 'government' style, you can't friggin browse by subject. It's starting to grate on my nerves. That, and the fact that freaking ResNet has bellied up repeatedly this week. Grrrrrr, with these things and the retarded "One" Card going on, I am totally NOT impressed with Tennessee Tech as a business or an institution right now .
In happier news, my grade for Native American History last semester finally came in. (I'd had an incomplete up until now.) I got an 'A'!!! YAY! Kewlness. Looking at last semester's grades and classes, they seem so long ago. I really can't imagine that less than six months ago I was taking Logics. It seems like a couple of years. Freshman year seems to have been a good four years ago, not two, and I feel like a different person since then. I'm not really sure how much I've changed. I stress less now, and I feel much closer to people, but many of my views/perceptions of the world haven't changed. I attribute this to the fact that I knew how the world worked when I got here, so not much revision was needed. (Heheh, waiting for some diety to strike lightning bolt at my hubristic ass.) In any case, even with the stress, this is probably the happiest/most content I've ever been.
I'm staying extremely busy this semester. Oh, and my respect for secretaries/event planners has grown immensely. Organizing students to go to NCHC has given me some very important insight. Namely, I HATE HATE HATE event planning with the passion of a thousand lusty rabbits. It wouldn't be so bad if it were something I had wanted to organize myself, like the writers' group, but I kinda got roped into this. Still, NCHC is a good thing for students to attend, myself included, and I'm glad SOMEONE organizes it. I just wish it wasn't ME. Oh well, gotta do something for work study, right? Life is full of drudge work I suppose (although this is relatively light drudge, it's just that it's the most annoying thing that I am currently responsible for).
I got a plant yesterday. :-) A cactus. They were "giving away" plants we'd pre-payed for through our tuition, so I figured I'd pick one up that would be death-resistant. I didn't want the dang thing to die a week after I bought it. Hence, the cactus. Alright, laterz!

Well, I've certainly gotten lazy about updating. Not that there hasn't been anything to write about, just I haven't sat down to write it. This past weekend I was supposed to go with my history class to talk about Greek sex on the steps of the Parthanon. Stupid me, I forgot to set my alarm. Grrrr, I was looking FORWARD to that too. I love Ms. Lanningham's style of teaching, and the material is becoming more interesting to me too. Hmmm, English majors have a built in history minor. I wonder how many more hours it would take to bump that up to a double major.
I was going to try out for Betty's Summer Vacation at the backdoor playhouse, but it turns out that I would have way too many conflicts with rehearsal times. The week of the show and the week before are all clear, though, so I should still be able to do something backstage, or maybe do lights again or something.
I finally watched Death to Smoochy, and the verdict is ... Smoochy kicks butt. It's a darkly humorous tale featuring the Irish Mafia, Children's Charities with a hit list, a psychotic vengeful kids' show host, moral ditties like "My Stepdad's Not Mean, He's Just Adjusting", and a love interest thrown in for flare. I loved it. Edward Norton rocks! Robin Williams did great too, very funny and very convincing as a psychopath.
Added to my musical recommendations: AudioVent. Excellent band. They're best song so far is 'The Energy', but they're talented overall and the rest of the songs I've found so far have been good. My second favorite is 'When the Rain'.
Has It Only Been a Year?
Wednesday, September 11, 2002
Ok, how many people here feel like the infamous September 11th happened at least three years ago? I'm sure I'm not the only one. Even with it being in the news, and perhaps even because it's been the most talked about news event since "the O.J. Show", that date has felt quite distant for me for awhile. We had a memorial service today, which I thought was nicely done. I still can't believe we actually got a New York City firefighter as the featured speaker. How did Cookeville ever snag THAT one? Anyway, the patriotism didn't feel as gluttonous as I expected it to.
Talking with people yesterday I kinda brought myself back to last year a bit. As trite as this probably sounds right now, that morning was the most depressingly surreal experience of my short life. I won't ever forget that first hour, when I saw the World Trade Center collapse and wished I could cry, but didn't have enough of a grip on reality to do it. I know that people die everyday, and that around the world there is much more violence to bemoan than we sheltered Americans can fathom, but that does not invalidate a feeling of personal injury when the country you live falls victim to an unexpected attack.
See, I consider myself the epitome of an American. Not becuase I was born here, and certainly not because I think we're perfect. Au contraire, we can be self-absorbed, hedonistic, slackers. That isn't the point. The point is the ideal. There are three things worth fighting for in America: freedom of thought (which includes religion and any other affiliations), the freedom of the press, and universal suffrage. He who controls information, controls the world. An unprejudiced media is the democratic ideal. This is the key to democracy: the guarentee of being able to have, share, and use one's opinions without fear.
Also, I straight up like captitalism. I prefer to work to get my own benefits, and challenge myself against competition. I like that competition encourages fair prices and higher quality products. (Remember, I'm judging the ideal here, not the degree of success with which we practice it.) This, however, is a preference, not a moral judgement. Other styles of economic/social order may work better for other people, and I'm ok with that.
What bothers me more than anything, is that the September 11th fiasco has proven we can't keep our media objective in a crises. Last year around this time, the slightest hint of lukewarm patriotism was enough to vindicate ostracisation on personal AND professional levels. How the heck are we supposed to come to a fair and wise course of action if we aren't allowed to debate all sides without persecution? (Understand, it's not that I'm against patriotism. Indeed, I consider myself a more true patriot than many others who claim this title. Patriotism is active responsibility, NOT blind allegiance.) Appreciation/love for one's country should be a CHOICE, not a mandate. To make American patriotism a requirement, as it has almostly literally become in mass media, is patently un-American. This country SHOULD have it's foundations in the right to be informed, and the right to choose.
Oh, one more thing. Why is it that we didn't hear about the dozen or so U.S. embassy bombings that occurred worldwide PRIOR to September 11th last year? American citizens died those places too. That degree of worldly ignorance is bewildering and frightening. Makes me wonder what else we won't hear about until too late.
Alright, I'll get off my soap box. As a final gesture, here is my moment of blankness (as opposed to silence) for those who were harmed by the attacks on 9-11, and their families: ___________________________________________________________.
The Estrogen Cake Strikes Again!!!
Sunday, September 8, 2002
For those of you clueless about "estrogen cake", basically this is a cake decked out with as much chocolate as possible. Mmmmmm, chocolate. Typically, it is served on a "girls' night out" evening. This weekend, that is exactly what a couple of my chica friends and I had. We treated ourselves to pizza, candy, chocolate ... and a series of Mel Brooks films. Let me tell you, Mel is HILARIOUS! (Most of the time he is anyway. The Producers was a bit of a dissapointment, although it's probably much better on Broadway.) He needs to never die, so that he can keep on making movies.
Between and after the flicks, we caught up on specifically female-aimed reading and a bit of on-school gossip. ... Remind me to never cross a music major. They go through hell for their degrees, and are not afraid to give others hell if they aren't up to par. The professionalism and work ethic exhibited by many of them are above and beyond the exploits of any other major. Alright, more laterz. Bya!
The Media Queen returns, full force!
Thursday, September 5, 2002
Yes, I'm back, and this time no bars are holding me back. That's right, downloading agents are once again my best friends (especially Imesh). Earlier this week I watched my ole Blur video for "Coffee and TV". That little vid has to be one of the most creative in quite awhile. If you get emotionally attached to the milk carton, it's really very sad! Lost yet? You'll just have to watch it to understand.
Another music video currently in the downloading process is the Backstreet Boys' "The Call". I still haven't seen all of it, but I'm SO excited. Instead of doing their usual "Look at me! I'm a pop star, so I can stand here and do nothing and get thousands of pre-teens across the U.S. to request me on TRL even though my music video is crappy, unoriginal, and boring" style. This video actually has, *gasp*, a PLOT. Apparently, someone ain't too happy with the BSB, and is taking measures to bump them off one by one. Haven't seen the end of the video yet, so I'm actually excited to see what happens. Wish this damn thing would download faster.
Oh, and I plan on putting up a list of my videos with short discriptions of each. Don't know how long that will take though, especially with my being busy doing other stuff. Laterz!
This L-O-N-G Weekend

Mmmmmmmm, Foo Fighters - Everlong. I could listen to this song forever. I NEED to make a Foo Fighters CD one of these days. They play's gud. ;-)
Good weekend, overall. I went out on the boat with two very fun peoples, Jason and Jamie. Got a little more tan (I hope) and I actually got to show them I could slalom ski. That was cool. Jumped off the 20 foot ledge. Jason jumped off the 31 footer, haha, it was SO cool. We're proud of you Jason! Jamie did awesome with skiing for her first time too. Congrats girlie! Hanging out at the lodge with them was cool too.
Oh yeah, had a friend that was sick too, that sucked. He got me seriously worried for a bit, but dude seems to be doing much better now, so good for him.
BTW, thank you mom and dad, for taking us out on the boat. Love you'se guys! Anybody wanting chocolate or vanilla pudding pie, drop by the dorms. We "might" still have some of my mom's yummy concoction left. Welcome back to everyone from their "laborous" weekend!
